• Myra and Frank Hazen House – Healdsburg Vernacular built in 1909: First Craftsman update in 1923

The serene elegance and gracious hospitality of Bella Luna Inn belies a surprisingly tempestuous past. The residence was built for Frank and Myra Hazen, a couple who arrived in Healdsburg in 1892 with a scandalous secret: they weren’t actually married. Frank opened Hazen’s dry goods store on the Plaza and became president of the Chamber of Commerce. Myra, a talented artist, presided over the influential Ladies’ Improvement Club and entertained frequently.

In 1906 they purchased this parcel and began construction of a nine-room house, which burned almost to the ground just before completion in 1908. Arson was suspected, but the couple had no known enemies, so it was a mystery. The house was rebuilt and completed in 1909.

Frank and Myra went from being the toast of the town to the talk of the town the next year when Frank’s wife Sarah tracked them down in Healdsburg, demanding money and child support. She also pressed a $20,000 lawsuit against Myra for alienation of affection. The juicy saga and settlement made headlines in the San Francisco papers. Frank and Myra returned to Healdsburg, married, with their heads held high.
